This is the video for “Parent’s Attic” off the Carnivores‘ upcoming record, “If I’m Ancient”. Ross approached me about creating a video a few months ago. I bit, and the rest is history. I’d seen Crnivores play a few shows at the time, and I’ve since seen them countless times (do they sleep?).
Stylistically, it’s a video collage using live footage I shot of the band at the Big House and The Earl, overlaid with ‘debris’ such as film and video artifacts, footage of specs of dust hovering in front of a projector, stop motion, green screen footage and more.
I made this short clip using two MRI image sequences of my brain, the first done in 2008, the other a few weeks ago. Many thanks to Christy Wilson for getting me the hi-res image sequences. This is the first iteration of some video experiments I’ll be doing with these sequences and other biographical footage.
Noisia’s “Split the Atom” narrowly takes the prize as my favorite electronica release of the past year, Flying Lotus’ “Cosmogramma” comes in a close second.
Cee-Lo’s “F** You” title video has been one of the viral hits of the last few days, mostly because the lyrics are so… righteous and relatable. If you’re a glut for punishment and would like to animate something like this yourself, you’ll need two bits of technology and some patience: Adobe After Effects, and Video Co-Pilot’s Sure Target preset (available here for free, with a video tutorial. If you’re going to spend hours using after effects, please get a wacom tablet, it will speed up your workflow and save you from the ravages of carpal tunnel syndrome. I also recommend geeking out on keyboard shortcuts.
I’m showing at Ghostprint Gallery in Richmond, VA. as part of a group show. The opening reception will be on July 2nd, 7pm to 10pm and the show will run until July 31, 2010. I’m showing several pieces for the first time, and it’s my first show Virginia.
