This is the video for “Parent’s Attic” off the Carnivores‘ upcoming record, “If I’m Ancient”. Ross approached me about creating a video a few months ago. I bit, and the rest is history. I’d seen Crnivores play a few shows at the time, and I’ve since seen them countless times (do they sleep?).
Stylistically, it’s a video collage using live footage I shot of the band at the Big House and The Earl, overlaid with ‘debris’ such as film and video artifacts, footage of specs of dust hovering in front of a projector, stop motion, green screen footage and more.
I made this short clip using two MRI image sequences of my brain, the first done in 2008, the other a few weeks ago. Many thanks to Christy Wilson for getting me the hi-res image sequences. This is the first iteration of some video experiments I’ll be doing with these sequences and other biographical footage.
Cee-Lo’s “F** You” title video has been one of the viral hits of the last few days, mostly because the lyrics are so… righteous and relatable. If you’re a glut for punishment and would like to animate something like this yourself, you’ll need two bits of technology and some patience: Adobe After Effects, and Video Co-Pilot’s Sure Target preset (available here for free, with a video tutorial. If you’re going to spend hours using after effects, please get a wacom tablet, it will speed up your workflow and save you from the ravages of carpal tunnel syndrome. I also recommend geeking out on keyboard shortcuts.
Considering it’s such an intuitive and pragmatic program for editing, I was surprised to find out earlier today that there is no native ‘rulers’ feature in Final Cut Pro 7.0. If you’re doing a multi-pane split screen and need to be precise with your cropping, don’t even bother looking around for any way to create and display rulers, there is none. From a quick google search, it seems the best available option is to A) make your rulers in photoshop, or B) buy and install a third party plugin :0! Those things cost money, and it feels wrong to have to buy an extension for something that should be included in the program.
If you know Steve, please ask him to stop sleeping on the job, or playing with his iPad, and to please fix this esoteric hole in his software.
Saw this great animated piece the other day. I most like the visual storytelling without any voiceover. In tandem, the sound effects and crisp graphic design keep things lively throughout.
